HERBICIDES

ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION

A 200 g/litre SC formulation containing diquat dibromide, a bipyridium herbicide for the control of a range of grass and broad-leaved weeds in potatoes, sugar beet, and ornamental plant production.

Maximum application rate: 4.0 litres per hectare
Maximum no. of applications: One per crop

WILDLIFE, MAMMALS AND BIRDS
WILDLIFE

RETRO is classified as ‘Harmful to livestock’ and risk management is essential. ‘Keep all livestock out of treated areas for at least 24 hours after treatment.’’

‘Do not use straw or haulm from treated crops as animal feed or bedding for at least four days after last application’.

MAMMALS AND BIRDS

Diquat is moderately toxic to mammals and birds if directly consumed, however, the risk to small mammals such as shrews, rabbits and water voles consuming earthworms or vegetation treated with RETRO is low. No risk management is necessary to protect these species provided that RETRO is used according to the label recommendations.

BEES
No risk management is necessary as RETRO is of low risk to honey bees.

NON-TARGET INSECTS AND OTHER ARTHROPODS
No risk management necessary. RETRO poses a low risk to a range of arthropod species commonly found in and around treated fields e.g. ground beetles, spiders, aphids and aphid parasitoids.

AQUATIC LIFE
RETRO is ‘Very Toxic to Aquatic Organisms‘. RETRO is moderately toxic to fish, and aquatic invertebrates, and highly toxic to algae. However, if used according to the label recommendations there will be insufficient contamination of water to present a risk to aquatic life. Care must be taken to ensure that surface waters or ditches are not contaminated with the product or used container.

Not categorised under the LERAP scheme.

SOIL AND GROUNDWATER, EARTHWORMS AND SOIL MICRO-ORGANISMS
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER

RETRO is very persistent in soil and degrades very slowly. Diquat is adsorbed to the soil and is not considered to be mobile. As diquat is not mobile in soil, if RETRO is used according to label recommendations, the risk to groundwater contamination is low.

EARTHWORMS

No risk management necessary. RETRO is of moderate toxicity to earthworms, however, the risk to earthworms is low.

SOIL MICRO-ORGANISMS

No risk management necessary. No effect on soil microbial processes were found and so the risk is considered to be low.

NON-TARGET PLANTS
No effects on non-target plants are expected when RETRO is used as directed. As RETRO is used as a contact herbicide, care should always be taken to minimise drift when applying close to field boundaries.

ALWAYS READ THE LABEL: USE PESTICIDES SAFELY

Care must be taken to minimise the risk of surface water contamination from farmyard and field sources.
