WILDLIFE, MAMMALS AND BIRDS
WILDLIFE
FORCE ST is classified as ‘Harmful to game, wild birds and animals’.
MAMMALS AND BIRDS
Risk management is essential, FORCE ST is of high toxicity to mammals and of moderate toxicity to birds, if directly consumed. Bury or remove spillages of treated seed immediately to avoid consumption. Care must be taken to keep treated seed secure from domestic stock/pets and wildlife at all times during storage and use to avoid accidental consumption. ‘Treated seed must not be used for food or feed’. ‘Keep livestock out of areas drilled with treated seed for at least 80 days after sowing’.
Direct drilling of seed considerably reduces the risk to birds but care must be taken to ensure that seed is not left on the surface. Visible seed should be buried.
BEES
No risk management is necessary as risk of exposure to bees from seed treatment use is low.
NON-TARGET INSECTS AND OTHER ARTHROPODS
No risk management necessary. FORCE ST poses a low risk to a range of arthropod species commonly found in and around treated fields.
AQUATIC LIFE
FORCE ST is classified as ‘Very toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment’.
FORCE ST is extremely toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Care should be taken to ensure that surface waters or ditches are not contaminated with the product or with the used container. No risk management necessary. When used according to the label instructions, the risk to aquatic life is low.
Not categorised under the LERAP scheme.
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER, EARTHWORMS AND SOIL MICRO-ORGANISMS
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER
FORCE ST has low persistence in soil. Tefluthrin is strongly bound to the soil and is not considered to be mobile. Use of FORCE ST according to the label instructions presents a low risk to groundwater.
EARTHWORMS
FORCE ST is of high toxicity to earthworms, however field studies demonstrate that tefluthrin is not mobile and so risk management is not necessary. In practice, the risk to earthworms is low.
SOIL MICRO-ORGANISMS
No risk management necessary. No effect on soil microbial processes were found and so the risk is considered to be low.
NON-TARGET PLANTS
FORCE ST is applied as a seed treatment and so the impact on non-target plants is expected to be minimal.
ALWAYS READ THE LABEL: USE PESTICIDES SAFELY
Care must be taken to minimise the risk of surface water contamination from farmyard and field sources.
