Agronomic information
Element is very early maturing with straw stiffness similar to Sequel.
Growth habit
Over winter: Semi prostrate
Tillering ability: High
Maturity: Early
Suitability for early drilling: Good
Optimum drilling date: Mid to late September
Recommended sowing rates
Hybrid barley, as with other hybrid crops, is drilled at a lower seed rate to maximise the potential of hybrid vigour, yield and grain quality.
The chart above should always be used in conjunction with thousand-grain weight of the seed to calculate the seed rate.
This shows that sowing at lower seed rates increases grain quality with no significant yield loss. Element should be sown at 200 seeds per square metre. If drilling in early October (Scotland) or mid-October (England), consider increasing the seed rate to 230 seeds per square metre. These figures should be used in conjunction with the thousand grain weight of the seed.
Nitrogen application
Trials have shown that an early application of nitrogen will increase yield levels.
Element will need the same total dose of nitrogen as a conventional feed barley.
In normal situations application of the total dose is recommended as follows:
• 30% middle to end of February (GS25)
• 50% middle to end of March (GS30)
• 20% middle to end of April (GS32)
These figures are for guidance purposes only. You must work with your agronomist when calculating nitrogen rates and timings, taking into consideration end market requirements and the fertility of the field. You should also work within any Defra guidelines / restrictions.
