WILDLIFE, MAMMALS AND BIRDS
WILDLIFE
BONTIMA is not classified as “Harmful to game, wild birds and animals”.
MAMMALS AND BIRDS
No risk management is necessary to protect mammals and birds. BONTIMA is of low toxicity to mammals and birds. The risk to wild mammals and birds feeding on treated areas is low due to the limited amount of residues likely to be consumed.
BEES
No risk management is necessary. BONTIMA is of low risk to honey bees.
NON-TARGET INSECTS AND OTHER ARTHROPODS
No risk management is necessary. BONTIMA poses a low risk to a range of arthropod species commonly found in and around treated fields, including predatory beetles, predatory mites and parasitic wasps.
AQUATIC LIFE
BONTIMA is classified as ‘Very toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment’.
BONTIMA is extremely toxic to aquatic invertebrates and fish, it is also highly toxic to algae. Although cyprodinil partitions into the sediment of aquatic systems, where it is persistent, the toxicity to sediment dwelling organisms is low. Care must be taken to ensure that surface waters or ditches are not contaminated with the product or the used container.
Risk management is essential. BONTIMA can be used safely providing care is taken to prevent spray drift reaching surface waters. The following risk management practices must be carried out in order to ensure that there is adequate protection for aquatic species:
‘Do not allow direct spray from horizontal boom sprayers to fall within 5 m of the top of the bank of a static or flowing waterbody, unless a Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) permits a narrower buffer zone, or within 1 m of the top of a ditch which is dry at the time of application. Aim spray away from water’.
LERAP Category B. Buffer zones may be reduced (see LERAP Guidelines).
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER, EARTHWORMS AND SOIL MICRO-ORGANISMS
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER
Cyprodinil and isopyrazam are of moderate persistence in soil under field conditions. Both cyprodinil and isopyrazam are absorbed to soil and therefore have low mobility in soil. Consequently there is a low risk of groundwater contamination.
EARTHWORMS
BONTIMA is of low to moderate toxicity to earthworms and the risk to earthworms is low, and so risk management is not necessary.
SOIL MICRO-ORGANISMS
No risk management necessary. No effect on soil microbial processes were found and so the risk is considered to be low.
NON-TARGET PLANTS
When used as recommended, BONTIMA is not expected to have adverse effects on non-target plants.
ALWAYS READ THE LABEL: USE PESTICIDES SAFELY
Care must be taken to minimise the risk of surface water contamination from farmyard and field sources.
