WILDLIFE, MAMMALS AND BIRDS
WILDLIFE
APRON XL is not classified as ‘Harmful to game, wild birds and animals’.
MAMMALS AND BIRDS
Risk mitigation is dependent on precision drilling. Metalaxyl-M, the active ingredient in APRON XL is of moderate toxicity to mammals and birds. To protect birds and wild mammals treated seed should not be left on the soil surface. Bury or remove spillages. Treated seed should be precision drilled. If seed is present on the soil surface, or if spills have occurred, and if conditions are appropriate, the field should be harrowed and then rolled to ensure good incorporation. Treated seed must not be used as food and feed.
BEES
No risk management is necessary as the risk of exposure to bees from seed treatment use is low.
NON-TARGET INSECTS AND OTHER ARTHROPODS
No risk management necessary. APRON XL poses a low risk to a range of arthropod species commonly found in and around treated fields.
AQUATIC LIFE
APRON XL is classified as ‘Harmful to aquatic organisms’.
Do not contaminate surface waters or ditches with chemical or used container. Avoid contamination via drains from farmyards and roads. No risk management necessary. When APRON XL is used according to label instructions there will not be sufficient contamination of water to present a risk to aquatic life.
APRON XL is not categorised under the LERAP scheme
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER, EARTHWORMS AND SOIL MICRO-ORGANISMS
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER
Metalaxyl-M has moderate persistence in soil under field conditions. Breakdown is largely due to soil micro-organisms, with considerable mineralisation to carbon dioxide. Although metalaxyl-M is highly mobile in soil, in practice there is a low risk of groundwater contamination following the recommended use of APRON XL.
EARTHWORMS
APRON XL is of low toxicity to earthworms. No risk management necessary to prevent risks to earthworms.
SOIL MICRO-ORGANISMS
No risk management necessary. No effect on soil microbial processes was found and so the risk is considered to be low.
NON-TARGET PLANTS
When used as recommended, APRON XL is not expected to have adverse effects on non-target plants.
ALWAYS READ THE LABEL: USE PESTICIDES SAFELY
Care must be taken to minimise the risk of surface water contamination from farmyard and field sources.
