DISEASES CONTROLLED
ALTO ELITE controls Powdery Mildew (winter wheat, winter and spring barley),
Septoria spp. (winter wheat), Yellow Rust (winter wheat, winter and spring barley), Brown Rust (winter wheat, winter and spring barley), Eyespot (winter wheat and winter barley),
Rhynchosporium (winter and spring barley), Net Blotch (winter and spring barley), Chocolate Spot, Rust (beans), Grey Mould (combining peas).
CROP SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Rates of Use
Apply ALTO ELITE at 2.0 litres/ha.
A maximum total dose of 4.0 litres/ha ALTO ELITE can be applied to crops of winter wheat, winter and spring barley, winter and spring field beans and combining peas.
CEREALS
Powdery Mildew (winter wheat, winter and spring barley)
Apply ALTO ELITE at the start of mildew development. A repeat application of ALTO ELITE can be made if necessary.
Septoria spp. (winter wheat)
ALTO ELITE controls
Septoria (
S.tritici and
S.nodorum). Where infection may occur following a “rain-splash event”*, apply ALTO ELITE as soon as possible afterwards to prevent visible symptoms developing. It is important to protect both the second leaf and flag leaf.
* “Rain-splash event” is defined as 10 mm or more of rain in up to three consecutive rain days i.e. days with 1 mm or more of rain; 5 mm of rain in any one day may be sufficient where stem elongation is incomplete or in short or thin crops.
ALTO ELITE provides prolonged protection from re-infection but a repeat application may be made if necessary.
Yellow Rust (winter wheat, winter and spring barley)
Apply ALTO ELITE when Yellow Rust is first detected, before 1% of any leaf is infected.
ALTO ELITE provides prolonged protection from re-infection. A repeat application may be made if necessary.
Brown Rust (winter wheat, winter and spring barley)
Apply ALTO ELITE when rust is first detected. ALTO ELITE provides prolonged protection, but a repeat application may be made if necessary.
Eyespot (winter wheat and winter barley)
When applied between GS30–34 to control other diseases, ALTO ELITE gives a useful reduction of Eyespot.
Where high levels of Eyespot are probable and to ensure that both ‘Rye’ and ‘Wheat’ types of Eyespot are well controlled and that there is no build up of the ‘Rye’ type, a tank mix with prochloraz (MAPP 11696) at 0.7 litres/ha is recommended.
Rhynchosporium (winter and spring barley)
Apply ALTO ELITE as soon as the disease becomes active. A repeat application of ALTO ELITE can be made if necessary.
Net Blotch (winter and spring barley)
Apply ALTO ELITE as soon as the disease becomes active. ALTO ELITE only gives moderate control. Where disease pressure is particularly high, ALTO ELITE may be applied in a tank mix with prochloraz (MAPP 11696) at 0.7 litres/ha. A repeat application of ALTO ELITE can be made if necessary.
WINTER AND SPRING FIELD BEANS
Chocolate Spot
ALTO ELITE at 2.0 litres/ha applied at early flower (GS203) will give moderate control of Chocolate Spot if active disease is present. A repeat application should be made 2–3 weeks later if the disease is still active.
Rust
ALTO ELITE provides prolonged protection. Apply ALTO ELITE when rust is first detected. A repeat application may be necessary.
Where bean rust continues to develop and further control is necessary, an alternative product must be used.
COMBINING PEAS
Grey Mould
Apply ALTO ELITE at 2.0 litres/ha at early flower (GS203) if active disease is present. A repeat application should be made 2–3 weeks later if disease is still active.
TIMING OF APPLICATION
The most effective control of diseases is achieved by applying ALTO ELITE when disease is first active.
ALTO ELITE may be applied before caryopsis watery ripe stage (GS71) on winter wheat, before beginning of anthesis (GS60) on winter and spring barley and six weeks before harvest on winter and spring field beans and combining peas.
MIXING AND SPRAYING
Good spray cover of the target is essential. Ensure the sprayer is in good condition and that the correct nozzles are fitted and working correctly.
Add half the volume of clean water to the spray tank. Add the recommended quantity of ALTO ELITE. Agitate while topping up the spray tank and continue agitation during spraying.
Wash out all spray equipment with water immediately after use.
Spray Quality
Apply as a MEDIUM quality spray as defined by BCPC*. A pressure of 2–3 bars should be used.
*For details see Nozzle Selection Handbook published by The British Crop Protection Council.
Boom Height
The boom height should be adjusted so that the output from alternate nozzles meets just above the crop.
Volume of Water
Apply ALTO ELITE in 200–400 litres of water/ha.
The higher spray volume is recommended where the crop is dense to ensure good
penetration to the lower leaves and stem bases.
CAUTION
1. The possible development of resistance to ALTO ELITE cannot be predicted. Should it occur ALTO ELITE may not give satisfactory control and no responsibility can be accepted for any loss incurred.
2. ALTO ELITE applied to winter wheat in the spring at GS30–33 may, on occasion, cause straw shortening. This effect causes no loss of yield and can be beneficial in a potential lodging situation.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
(a) Operator protection
Engineering control of operator exposure must be used where reasonably practicable in addition to the following personal protective equipment:
WEAR SUITABLE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (COVERALLS), SUITABLE PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND FACE PROTECTION (FACE SHIELD) when handling the concentrate.
WEAR SUITABLE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (COVERALLS) when applying by vehicle mounted/drawn equipment.
WEAR SUITABLE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (COVERALLS) AND SUITABLE PROTECTIVE GLOVES when handling contaminated surfaces.
WEAR SUITABLE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING (COVERALLS), SUITABLE PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND RUBBER BOOTS when using a knapsack or pedestrian controlled sprayer.
However, engineering controls may replace personal protective equipment if a COSHH assessment shows they provide an equal or higher standard of protection.
IN CASE OF CONTACT WITH EYES, RINSE IMMEDIATELY with plenty of water and seek
medical advice.
DO NOT BREATHE SPRAY.
WASH HANDS AND EXPOSED SKIN before eating, drinking or smoking and after work.
(b) Environmental protection
To protect aquatic organisms, respect an unsprayed buffer zone distance to surface water bodies in line with LERAP requirements.

DO NOT ALLOW DIRECT SPRAY from horizontal boom sprayers to fall within 5 m of the top of the bank of a static or flowing waterbody, unless a Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) permits a narrower buffer zone, or within 1 m of the top of a ditch which is dry at the time of application. DO NOT ALLOW DIRECT SPRAY from hand-held sprayers to fall within 1 m of the top of the bank of a static or flowing waterbody. Aim spray away from water.
This product qualifies for inclusion within the Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) scheme. Before each spraying operation from a horizontal boom sprayer, either a LERAP must be carried out in accordance with CRD published guidance or the statutory buffer zone must be maintained. The results of the LERAP must be recorded and kept available for inspection for three years.
Do not contaminate water with the product or its container. Do not clean application equipment near surface water. Avoid contamination via drains from farmyards and roads.
(c) Storage and disposal
KEEP IN ORIGINAL CONTAINER, tightly closed, in a safe place.
RINSE CONTAINER THOROUGHLY by using an integrated pressure rinsing device or
manually rinsing three times. Add washings to sprayer at time of filling and dispose of safely.
THE (COSHH) CONTROL OF SUBSTANCES HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH REGULATIONS MAY APPLY TO THE USE OF THIS PRODUCT AT WORK
