WILDLIFE, MAMMALS AND BIRDS
AGRIMEC is not classified as 'Harmful to game, wild birds and animals'.
AGRIMEC is highly toxic to mammals and moderately toxic to birds. However no risk management is necessary if AGRIMEC is used as directed. The risk to wild mammals and birds feeding on treated areas is low due to the limited amount of residues likely to be consumed.
BEES
AGRIMEC is classified as 'High risk to bees'.
Risk management is essential. 'Do not apply to crops in flower or to those in which bees are actively foraging. Do not apply when flowering weeds are present'.
Abamectin does not have long-term activity on bee brood but it is advisable to close hives for at least 24 hours when bees might forage in and around the treated area.
NON-TARGET INSECTS AND OTHER ARTHROPODS
RISK TO NON-TARGET INSECTS OR OTHER ARTHROPODS. The best available application technique, which minimises off-target drift should be used to reduce effects on non-target insects or other arthropods.
AQUATIC LIFE
AGRIMEC is 'VERY TOXIC TO AQUATIC ORGANISMS'. Care must be taken to ensure that surface waters or ditches are not contaminated with the product or the used container.
Risk management essential. Whilst the toxicity of AGRIMEC to aquatic invertebrates and fish is extremely high, the product may be used safely providing care is taken to prevent spray drift reaching surface waters. The following risk management practices must be carried out:
DO NOT ALLOW DIRECT SPRAY from broadcast air-assisted sprayers to fall within 40 m of the top of the bank of a static or flowing waterbody, unless a Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) permits a narrower buffer zone, or within 5 m of the top of a ditch which is dry at the time of application. Aim spray away from water.
This product qualifies for inclusion within the Local Environmental Risk Assessment for Pesticides (LERAP) scheme for BROADCAST AIR-ASSISTED SPRAYERS ONLY. Before each spraying operation from a broadcast air-assisted sprayer, either a LERAP must be carried out in accordance with CRD's published guidance or the statutory buffer zone must be maintained. The result of the LERAP must be recorded and kept available for three years.
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER, EARTHWORMS AND SOIL MICRO-ORGANISMS
Abamectin is not persistent and has low mobility in soil. Use of AGRIMEC according to the label instruction presents a low risk to groundwater.
AGRIMEC is of moderate toxicity to earthworms. No risk management is necessary as the risk to earthworms is low.
AGRIMEC is unlikely to have any long-term effect on soil microbial activity. The risk is therefore considered to be low. No risk management is necessary.
NON-TARGET PLANTS
No effects on non-target plant species are expected when AGRIMEC is used as recommended.
ALWAYS READ THE LABEL: USE PESTICIDES SAFELY
Care must be taken to minimise the risk of surface water contamination from farmyard and field sources.
